The Island of Symi
The Island of Symi
Symi is an island of the Dodecanese (the twelve island complex) and is located north-west of Rhodes. It has a barren, dry, rocky landscape and has no water, depending on Rhodes for its water-supply. In mythology it is the island that gave birth to the three graces.
There are ferryboats that go daily to Symi and a visitor can book a day trip to this graphic island, which takes about an hour to arrive at the fjord-like harbour. The island has an area of approximately 70 sq. kilometers and is divided into two main settlements, Yialos and Chorio. The first one, Yialos, has houses built amphitheatrically around the harbour. Chorio is higher up on the hilltop overlooking the harbour. Once there one can visit the monastery of Archangel Michael (Panormitis), a nautical museum, and the caves.
